Catalogue Note
An extremely important reference in the Submariner history, the reference 1680 was released in 1967 and produced until 1979. The reference 1680 was waterproof up to 200 meters. It can be divided into two main categories, cosmetically differentiated by their dial: the watches produced until 1976 would bear a red Submariner script while the later examples would bear only white text (with feet-first depth indication) on their dial.
This watch is the most collectible Submariner Date as it features the highly sought-after red writing designation.
Collectors have classified the 'Red Sub' in seven dial variations, or 'Marks', based on slight variations of the graphics.
The three first marks are the most sought-after ones as they combine the appeal of the red writing with another typical feature of early Submariner pieces: the meter first depth rating.
The present example is fitted with a Mark II dial, matching with the 2.2m case number, which is characterized by the open '6' , thinner font and longer “F” than Mark III.
This Rolex Submariner 1680 Red Meter first mark II has remained with the same owner for over 30 years and is now offered on the international market for the first time.
Having remained used for a long time, the indexes of the dial, hands and even the pearl on the bezel have acquired an extraordinary and rich orange 'pumpkin' patina.
This stunning aging of the luminescent material gives an incredible allure to the piece.
Furthermore, the case retains overall strong proportions and is fitted on its 7836 bracelet with 280 endlinks and its clasp marked for 1969.
This lot is a wonderful opportunity to secure a very charismatic and rare Submariner 1680 Red Meter first.
It will be a smart and attractive addition to any enthusiast’s collection.
Condition Report
MVT: is running at the time of cataloging. The date is advancing.
CASE: is in good condition and retains very nice proportions even if it has most probably been lightly polished in the past. Very small dings and light scratches on both bands. One small but visible dent on the left band. Small dent on the left top lug. Bezel in good condition with a small ding at 12 and a small loss at 7 o'clock. The crown is slightly damaged but works perfectly. Inside case back is engraved '1680 III.69'
BRACELET: is in good very good condition. 7836 / Clasp: 3 69 / End link: 280
DIAL: is in good and very attractive condition. Very nice and even patina on the indexes and on the hands. Small loss on the hour hand. The second hand may have been changed.
Overall a very charming example.
