Theodore Clement Steele was an American Impressionist painter best known for his idyllic landscapes depicting his home state of Indiana. Steele belonged to the Hoosier Group, a group of midwestern Impressionist artists. Dated 1913, Peony Garden is characteristic of Steele’s appreciation for the natural world around him with its delicately rendered flowers and painterly approach to the surrounding landscape.
